Cleaning is not the Problem
In Most Homes

I really don't like cleaning that much. It takes a lot of time and it is hard work. I think it is overrated how much it is needed. The real problem in most homes is that there is clutter and mess, not dirt, dust and germs.

The easiest, fastest and least amount of work way to keep your home looking good is to do things often that are easy to do and that make the area look the best.

Things like:

1) Take out the garbage often.

2) Do the dishes right after a meal.

3) Do the laundry often.

4) Put away the dishes when they are dry.

5) Keep your kitchen counters as clear as possible.

5) Make the beds every morning.

6) Keep stuff put away all the time.

7) Keep stuff stacked neatly that should be stacked.

8) Hang up things that should be hung up.

9) Keep books on the bookshelf.

10) Bring back things that should be brought back. Things like library books, rented movies, stuff that belong to others and things to be returned to stores.

11) Make the repairs to your things or throw them away.

12) Straighten out everything that looks better straightened out. Things like books on shelves, couch cushions, things on tables and chair placement. Keep that tidy look; it really helps to be architecturally correct.

13) Avoid wearing shoes in the house to minimize outside dirt being tracked around.

14) Do things carefully so as to not create a mess.

15) Only work on a few things at a time.

16) Pick up as you go.

17) Don't start major house remodeling projects without being totally ready for them. Nothing is as messy as a remodeling project in the house.

Endlessly dusting, vacuuming and trying to kill germs will not really matter that much if your home is cluttered with stuff strewn about.

No one will care about a little dust if your kitchen counters are loaded with dirty dishes.

No one will care if your carpet has not been vacuumed lately if there are stacks of stuff all over the floor.

Clutter is the problem in a messy house, not dirt.

Clutter will destroy the look of a home more than dirt will. Looking at piles of stuff is demoralizing.

Now I know you have to do some cleaning. This chore cannot be totally avoided. I just look for ways to minimize the time I spend working on these types of tasks. With that idea in mind I have found a great resource called Clean Organized Family Home. This site is also about organization principles with some really good ideas on the how best to clean. The author of this site has even been on TV sharing her good ideas.
