The Best Closet System

I was just looking at a closet system in a magazine. It was a homemade system constructed out of wood. It was in a handyman type magazine where they mostly show things you can make around the house. The pictures looked nice when it was done but as I was studying it something just didn't look right. I was finally able to determine what it was. The system had too many shelves.

There was the big shelf across the top. There isn't really anything you can do about that. Then they had constructed a shelf system in the middle. So instead of having one long pole for hanging clothes with a long shelf on top, they had two short poles on the outside with the shelf system in the middle. The shelves went from the floor to a point where it intersected the top shelf. There were 6 shelves.

I don't like it.

The picture had the sweaters and jeans all nicely folded on the top four shelves then shoes on the two lower shelves.

The system did not show that many things in the closet. There were only 4 sweaters on one shelf and 3 jeans on another. Most people, even if they are constantly getting rid of clothes, have a lot more than that.

It is more normal to have piles and piles of sweaters and jeans.

The main problem with shelves is that whenever you have many articles of clothing folded and stacked on each other you have to take everything on top out to get the article on the bottom. Even worse is when you want a middle item. You will still need to take everything out.

That is why the stacking of clothes on shelves should be avoided as much as possible.

It is better to put everything you can on hangars that hang on a closet rod. You then just take the article of clothing that you want, you don't have to dig through a bunch of clothes and mess them all up.

Jeans, sweaters, button down shirts, pants, polo shirts, golf shirts and even t-shirts can be hung on hangars.

That is the easiest way to store them so that you can easily get them out and not mess up the rest.

I like a closet system that goes heavy on the rods. It is better to have 2 levels of rods if possible for clothes that are not that long.

Better still is to have really long closets that have long rods. That is the ultimate way to have organized clothing along with keeping the number of clothes you have to a manageable level.

Right now I have an 8 foot long closet with just a closet pole the whole length of the closet and a shelf over. This closet system provides enough room for the majority of my clothes.
