Family Organizer
Watch the Kids

To be a good family organizer you need to know what is most important.

The other day I was on the road to my parent's house. It was Sunday morning and I was trying to get there for lunch. I stopped for gas at a convenience store part way there since I was at a half a tank.

When I pulled up to the pump and got out I saw a small child wandering around the parking lot in back of the cars parked up by the store.

I think it was a little girl about 2 or 3. She was just walking back and forth in back of the cars. I kind of watched her thinking it was odd that somebody was not watching her.

Finally her mother came out. But for a good 4 or 5 seconds the little girl was in a really dangerous place.

Usually convenience stores are busy places and cars are whipping in and out.

This was a beautiful sunny fall morning. It was unseasonably warm for Wisconsin; it was in the 60's.

It could have turned into a tragic, terrible event right in front of my eyes.

The girl's mother just seemed so nonchalant about it, not a good family organizer at all. She just sashayed out the door and called to the girl to come to her. The little girl did not go to her right away. She just kind of stood there in the parking lot.

I was getting ready to bolt to the girl and the mother did not seem to be concerned at all.

Maybe she knew that the cars that were parked there were not going to back up right then. I hope she knew. Otherwise, she just seems like she isn't trying too hard to watch her child.

I know that you don't want to think about a tiny child getting hit by a car. That is such a horrible thought, but that is what you need to be thinking about when you are supposed to be caring for them.

Watch your kids closely is the most important job of a family organizer.
