Getting More Organized
At The Gym

Getting more organized doesn't take a lot of extra money.

I joined a new gym recently. I was tired of the gym I had been going to the last few years. The new gym is much less expensive than the old. It is close to my office. I thought about getting more organized in my workouts by doing it right after work instead of going home.

I guess the reasons I changed were enough to get me to change. Plus, the salesman was super convincing.

At my old gym, there were lockers, but I never used them. I just put my coat and gym bag in the cubbies that were right in the middle of the weight room area.

At the new gym there are no cubbies. So I have to use the lockers for my coat, gym bag and other belongings.

So I have to have a lock.

When I went to Wal-mart for locks I searched the entire store before a clerk finally told me where they were. Whenever I am in a store the clerks instinctively know to avoid me because they don't know where anything is either. Anyway, the locks were in the hardware department, the last place I would have looked.

I found a whole range of locks.

I decided I wanted a combination lock, not a keyed lock, so I wouldn't have to carry a key while I worked out.

My eyes went naturally to the lowest priced lock. I normally always look to the cheapest product I can find. It is habitual. The lock was $2.47.

As I was reaching for the $2.47 lock, I saw it.

A brightly colored yellow combination lock for $3.27.

I pulled my hand away and stepped back to think about this.

I remembered being in locker rooms in high school and in other gyms looking at the sea of locks that all looked the same trying to remember which locker was mine. I can remember trying to open a combination to a lock that wasn't mine. The embarrassment and worry that I wouldn't be able to remember where my lock was.

Should I spend an extra $0.80 to get a colored lock? This seemed like a lot of extra money. But I reasoned, the yellow lock would usually be in stark contrast to the other locks and I would be able to easily see what locker was mine after a hot, sweaty workout. I wouldn't have to remember exactly where my locker was.

A simple, inexpensive idea for getting more organized.
