Home Organizing for Winter
It is vitally important to do some home organizing for winter. You will suffer big time if you don't. Winter in northern climates can be so stressful. It is hard to believe that so many people live where the winters are severe. You want to get ready before the bad weather hits, not after. After a big storms starts is too late. Then you will struggle and suffer. Do this work now, before the snow and cold. Here are some home organizing tips to get you more ready for winter: 1) When you are expecting a big snowstorm back your car into the garage. Then when you drive out you don't have to do any backing. Backing up is the main time when you will get stuck in a snowdrift or hit another car in the street. You avoid all those problems by setting up your car to drive forward as much as possible. 2) Make room in your garage for all your cars by winter. I have stressed elsewhere in my website to have room in your garage for your car all the time, but I know that is hard for most people. You really need to have those cars inside in the winter. It is so much nicer to get in and go rather than brushing off snow, scraping ice and waiting for your defroster to clear your windshield. If your car is in the driveway when you are shoveling or snow blowing you will have to move it and the tracks where you drove will be hard to clear. 3) Fill your snow blower with gas, check the oil, pump up the tires, start it up and put it in the place in your garage so it is ready to go before the first snowstorm. 4) Stay warm. Get out your winter clothes and have them all handy. I keep my boots in my trunk for emergencies. I have heavy mittens, gloves, wool socks, a hat and extra gloves in my car. I have had to dig myself out of snowdrifts and I was very happy to put on my boots and other gear before I started this. I normally just wear a leather jacket and light gloves most of the winter. Most people do not bundle up all winter. There is not really a need to do that. It is not snowing and cold all the time. Just be ready for the times that it is. 5) When you first start snow blowing and shoveling, make sure and clear your driveway and walks completely, maybe even a bigger area. Blow it as far away as you can. You never know how much snow there will be and how soon it will melt. If you don't start the winter with it being completely clear it will be harder and harder to clear as the winter drags on. You will have less and less room to put the snow. Your driveway and walks will get narrower and narrower. 6) Stay ahead of your home organizing errands. Go sooner, rather than later. Don't wait for things to run out. You don't want to be low on food and personal necessities during a 3 day blizzard. You don't want to be forced to go out. It is so much better to avoid driving in the bad weather. Buy whatever is that you need most of the time. You need this stuff anyway so it is not a waste, you will use it. Buy an extra can of coffee, bottled water, canned and frozen food, toilet paper, kleenex, whatever it is. The idea is that you can just stay home for a few days is you need to. 7) Just make up your mind that you will not always be able to do exactly what you want to do when you want to do it. Last winter there were so many weekends I wanted to go out, but didn't because of the snow and cold. I did not want to deal with the problems of winter. Winter also creates a lot more work. There are a lot more clothes to wash and a lot more messy floors to clean. Just brace yourself for the extra work of home organizing. 8) Put out your big floor mats by your doors so you have a place to put your snowy and wet clothes when you come in. Use these home organizing tips to make your winter a lot less stressful.
