Multi-tasking
For awhile, multi-tasking was all the rage. Multi-task this and multi-task that. Then it fell out of favor when it became evident that you cannot concentrate on high level activities while trying to do other things. What I recommend is multi-tasking on low level activities. Low level activity is something that you want to do, but is not really a big deal if you do it or not. You can get by without doing it. It is not a needed activity just something that is nice. It isn't a big deal like your job or caring for very young children. Those things demand your concentration. I'll give you some of my low level activities that I tend to do multi-tasking to get you started. Tanning. I just started getting a tan a few years ago when I moved into my apartment after leaving my wife. My apartment is on the second floor with a deck that is in the sun part of the day. I never did any tanning up to this point. It always seemed like a waste of time. I would get a little tan by default. Working in the yard when I had a home. Going to the beach a little with friends when I was in my early 20's. But even that was just so rare and we only went to the beach to drink beer and look at girls. Besides in Wisconsin it is very rare for it to be warm and sunny when you have some time to go to the beach. You just cannot count on the sun being out. Now, I do want a tan but I really don't want to just sit in the sun and take all the time that it requires. In order to accomplish the tanning I have done some multi-tasking of all these things at the same time: 1) I wrote this article out in pen. 2) I have written a lot of other articles. 3) I read novels. 4) Reading self development books and articles. 5) Reading my mail. 6) Making grocery lists and other lists. 7) Going through my Planner book. 8) Listening to music. 9) Napping. 10) Enjoying a beverage. 11) Stretching. 12) Making calls. I just find sitting in the sun very boring. It is hard for me to just sit and do nothing. I have not found a way to use my computer outside yet because of the glare from the sun. If I did I could spend even more time outside surfing the net. I don't watch much TV. Obviously, most of the stuff I listed above could be done while watching TV also. Maybe TiVO or a DVR helps but I think most people just use those devices to watch more TV rather than do other things. I hear people all the time talking about all the shows they regularly watch. I find it hard to believe that anyone with a full time job has enough time to regularly watch a number of shows. It seems to me that keeping up with lots of shows is a big hobby for a lot of people. That's fine, if you enjoy it and you have the time for it. I guess my hobby is internet surfing. I spend hours on this every week if not every day. So I am not here to judge on the quality of your hobby. That being said, when I do watch TV, the most entertaining shows are all about what all people want to be doing in real life. Things like: 1) Joking around with friends. 2) Cracking wise at work. 3) Avoiding work at work. 4) Hooking up with someone new. 5) Having a lot of money to spend on fun. 6) Exotic locations. 7) Fast cars. 8) Beautiful people. 9) Getting into mischief. 10) Having wild adventures. 11) Saving the day. 12) Solving crimes. 13) Courtroom drama. There are not too many shows about people sitting alone and watching TV and multi-tasking. I would rather spend as much time as possible on what I want to do and working towards my goals rather than living through others. I get my inspiration from my own research on the internet rather than watching another mindless show. Some of the shows are just so frustrating to watch. They seem to want to make a point rather than entertain. I guess that is why my favorite shows did not have a point, they only seem to want to entertain. My main form of multi-tasking while watching TV is to eat dinner, read my email, surf the internet and do some light computer work while watching.
