Food Storage Containers

Food storage containers can take up an enormous amount of space in your kitchen. People are always complaining about this and trying to come up with a better way of storing these things.

I just talked to my mom the other day and she was doing this kind of thing at my sister's house.

She went through all my sister's storage containers, her tupperware and the other types and reorganized them.

Right away I told her that I put the lid on the container when I put it away so that when I grab the container it has the lid on it.

She said she couldn't do that because there was not enough space to store the containers with the lid on. She had to store the bottom container part in one part of the cabinet and the lids in another.

I was used to this method when I was married. My wife did the same thing. The lids were all in one drawer and the bottom container parts were on shelves in the cabinets.

This is the normal, easy way to not have the containers take up so much space. The lids are all together and condensed. The bottom containers are all nested together and take up less space.

Of course you can see what I think of this method.

It's a stupid waste of time.

It wastes your time when you are cleaning up in the kitchen.

When you are cleaning up the kitchen you want to do it quickly, don't you?

I enjoy the eating the most and the preparation of the meal a very distant second.

Cleaning up is not even close.

I only clean up because to not clean up the kitchen is the worst mess you can have in the house.

Making it hard to clean up after a meal is the number one reason people go out to eat so much. There should not even be a discussion.

Everyone hates the cleanup.

The only time that cleaning up the kitchen is remotely fun is after a big party and everyone is working together and continuing the conversation while working.

So, the first step when dealing with the storage containers is to put the lids on all the containers.

Then put them away.

The problem will be that they don't fit in the cabinets anymore.

I think it is fine to put smaller containers inside larger containers. That will save some space.

It is also fine to put some containers in other parts of the house away from the kitchen. Containers are handy for other uses outside of the kitchen.

Now you will still be stuck with too many.

Go back and read my article on clutter. You will have to throw out some containers or you will need to use more cabinet space for them.

There is no other way.

Throw out the broken ones and the stained ones.

Throw out the storage containers that you got for free because they had food in them.

Throw out the ones that are hard to clean.

You will probably still have too many.

You will have to decide what to keep and what to throw.

When you are done with going through your food storage containers, go out to eat, you deserve it.
