Emergencies and Stress Management
Some people are not good at stress management and will add problems to your life. I always check my cell phone voice mail right after work. I turn off my cell phone during the day at work. It doesn't work that well in my office in the basement of the building I work at. I also do not want it ringing while at work. My ex-wife, kids and parents all know my work phone number if there is an emergency. Also, the kid's school has my work numbers. When I left work today I checked my messages and the message was marked Urgent. I immediately thought, one of the kids was in an accident and was hurt. It turned out to be the real estate agent who is selling the apartment building where I live. He had a plumber at the building and wanted to get the plumber into my apartment to take care of some of the minor plumbing in my apartment. Some emergency. They have known about the problems for months. He just did not want to pay the additional $40 for another plumbing service call. His idea of an emergency and mine are not that similar. See if you agree with my ideas of what would be an emergency: 1) My children in an accident. 2) My parents in the hospital. 3) Someone trapped in a burning building. 4) Someone in a flood. The realtor's idea of an emergency is trying to save $40 by making me change all my plans I had for right after work. I'm a little bitter. I had 5 or 6 errands to run right after work in the area by my office. Instead I drove right home to open my apartment. When I got there the plumber had left anyway. The worst part is the seconds of terror I had when I heard the voice mail say URGENT. What do you think about that? Am I being overly critical of this? I don't think so. I think the word urgent should be saved for things that are urgent and that are emergencies. If more people thought this way, stress management would not be an issue.
